4mm Plywood
We are currently using poplar for our plywood shapes. This is a good quality unfinished plywood that is perfect for wooden craft shapes. This is an Italian, pale coloured, light weight low density hardwood with a natural wood appearance which makes it perfect for clear finishes, waxes, left natural, painting or it is perfect for pyrography too. We lightly sand both sides before they leave the workshop, but if you require a really smooth finish some extra preparation and sanding may be needed. As with all timber products it will have some grain markings, flecks or small knots on the faces. We use lasers to cut our shapes and this process will leave a light brown edge and occasionally it may also leave a few small flash/scorch marks behind on the surface. However these can easily painted over or can be removed using sand paper.
3mm MDF
This is a very popular choice amongst crafters as it is a manmade fibre board free from any knots and grain markings. It has a smooth, even surface that needs very little work to achieve a nice finish (a little sanding between coats) It's thick enough to be strong but offers good value for money too. We use lasers to cut our shapes and this process will leave a light brown edge and occasionally it may also leave a few small flash/scorch marks behind on the surface. However these can easily painted over or can be removed using sand paper.
2mm MDF
This is the thinnest in our range of shapes. Its light and thin so could be used for projects where this is important to the crafter. It has the advantage of a smooth finish and offers very good value for money. Normally a darker in colour than the 3mm MDF. We use lasers to cut our shapes and this process will leave a light brown edge and occasionally it may also leave a few small flash/scorch marks behind on the surface. However these can easily painted over or can be removed using sand paper.
